Be the designer of your own HOME
By Mannan Mashhur Zarif
Real estate, in Bangladeshi terms, can be an expensive affair. While even in our neighbouring countries apartment spaces sell in three figures, here in the capital of Bangladesh the cost incurred is no less than Tk. 2,000 per square feet and upwards.
“Smart Living” is your solution to making proper use of valued real estate and creating adequate space, thus helping not only to cut down costs but also making  a home that is aesthetically pleasing, and one that reflects your persona, your likes and your dislikes.
“People in Bangladesh do not have a clear conception of interior décor. They are willing to spend a huge amount of money for space, but fail to utilise that very space in creating a healthy, tranquil living,” said Md Kawser Hassan, managing director. Interior décor is not only about beautifying your home, but it also involves maximising your living experience within a limited space and budget. Take for instance, the kitchen – an essential part in our lifestyle; yet a space hardly given any engineering or artistic consideration.
“Here at Smart Living, we design kitchens from scratch; starting from setting the gas lines, to arranging the plumbing to making arrangements for the range hood. We offer a one stop solution,” said the young entrepreneur.
A flat owner must contact Smart Living even before the initial superstructure is laid in his/her apartment or house. Basically they must be given an empty space sans any superstructure, or walls. This will save money and aid in eliminating the additional hassle of restructuring everything in the architectural design of the apartment in question. Thus, rather than buying a 1200 square feet apartment, you can make maximum utilisation of a smaller space and thus settle for something smaller in size.
“It may even save you a considerable sum of money,” Kawser commented. “Ideally we must start from the drawing board and provide an engineering solution first. Our services are, however, not limited to that alone. We also make designs for customised furniture that will help you carve a niche. Every house tells a story, and we are here just to help make the narrative,” he further added.
Before prescribing any set of ideas or solutions, designers at Smart Living first talk with their clients. Through dialogue and adequate exchange of ideas, a concept evolves. Finally a layout is conceived.
The next logical step in arriving at a solution is to weigh the available options, in the context of the space in question and the budget of the owner. Through this gradual step, the final product is arrived at.
Rather than leaving options to choose from a drawing board, Smart Living has a flagship outlet located in Gulshan that showcases household furniture and products. Starting from state-of-the-art kitchen appliances and furnishings that are handy and within the budget of the common people, the shop provides a display of products, which takes care of even the minutest of your needs.

Modular furniture is popular in the west for the functional versatility of these household pieces and Smart Living is trying its best to popularise this idea in the Bangladeshi context.  However, it would not be wise to dream of creating the perfect zone that you to create in your home. It is best that you take the basic suggestion of the professionals and take it from there.
“Our products are environment friendly,” reiterated Kawser. “Rather than using wood we use particle boards for our designs, as these are cheaper and a viable alternative for wood.”
We are trying to bring interior décor to the common man. People have this misconception that this is something only the rich can afford. Although it is true that interior décor does cost a fair bit, when done with proper guidance, it can actually save money in the long run.”
Whether we realise it or not, every inch of the space we live in narrates a part of our persona, be it the living room, the kitchen, the master bed or even the bathrooms. Each of these places tells a story that is yours to weave. As we embrace modern concepts of living, it is probably not a bad idea to consider advice from able hands, when it comes to home décor.
Do what it takes to make your space more liveable. Do what it takes to tell your story.
